DANE PIEDT OPEN TO ALL OFFERS‚ KOLPAK INCLUDED

Dane Piedt recently was reported to have said he was “happy to play (county cricket) as a Kolpak.”

As such, as long as he was on a Kolpak contract, he would be debarred from representing South Africa in any match. This would make Piedt a rare thing: a player of colour seeking to further his career in another country.

That route has been taken more by the white players, and greeted by a chorus of criticism of the policies, those quota selection policies that aim at transforming the cricket game at all levels in South Africa.

Jacques Kallis, former South African all-rounder due to a tweet he had once posted, would have earned approval from that lobby, after Keaton Jennings, son of Ray Jennings wicket keeper, and a former captain of the under 19 South African team, moved to England four years ago, and went on to score 112 against India in his debut on Thursday at Mumbai.

“Yet another one slips through our system‚” Kallis had written. He was however, perhaps, mindful of the fact that Stiaan van Zyl, Simon Harmer‚ and Hardus Viljoen who between them have from December 2014 to January 2016, played 18 tests for South Africa, have opted for the Kolpak option in the past two months.

For Graeme Smith, Kallis former captain, he had a different view of the subject matter,

“Everyone’s probably going to go with the transformation angle but Cricket South Africa have been open and honest about their transformation policies now and I like that; it’s nice to see them put themselves out there.”

Piedt’s agent, Francois Brink indicated that his client was not specifically after a Kolpak offer.

“It’s not that he’s specifically looking for a Kolpak offer‚” Brink‚ told TMG Digital.
